Small Beginnings Empty
PostSubject: Small Beginnings   Small Beginnings EmptyWed Oct 01, 2014 10:59 am

It was a chilly autumn morning deep within the wood, the sun just beginning to peek through the trees and illuminating all the leaves to highlight their rich golden and deep scarlet hues.

A large male elk stood apart from the rest of her herd, nose down to the grass, grazing peacefully and unaware of the hunter's eyes above it, crouched on a branch and hidden behind the leaves. Face partially concealed under her hood, the hunteress was silent, waiting and watching for the perfect moment for her to strike.

She had been tracking this particular herd for a while now and singled out this male for the taking in particular. It's hind leg was was weak; injured during an encounter with a cougar a few days earlier and it made it difficult to keep up with the rest of it's herd.

The hunteress very slowly and as quietly as possible, drew her hidden blade with a flick of her wrist. The elk's ears perked up and her head shot up, nostrils flared and on high alert.

Now.

Effortlessly,  she leaped away from her branch and pounced on her prey, using gravity's force to help bury her blade deep behind the base the elk's  skull, severing the spinal cord. The elk gave a high pitched scream which alerted the others and scattered them deeper into the mountain woods.

The huntress straighted up and withdrew her blade from her kill, her right arm covered in the elk's blood. She shrugged off her hunting bag from her shoulder and withdrew her skinning knife,  crouching down once more over her prize.

She bowed her head, closed her eyes and muttered a prayer of respect and thanks to the female elk, offering her safe passage to the spirit world before delving her blade into the thick fur and flesh.

She stood up again after gathering all that she needed and carefully storing the meat and pelt in her bag, which she threw over her shoulder. She glanced up at the sky to get her bearings from the rising sun's position and headed east towards the nearest town to sell her earnings for coin.

After several miles and hours she finally reached her destination and after haggling with the vendor, managed to trade her elk meat, pelt and a few rabbits that she trapped for a fair amount. As much as she disliked being among the busy hustle and bustle of the town, she decided to find a tavern to rest for a while before exploring for new assassination contracts.

A sign with a grinning fox carved into it and between the words "The Laughing Fox" hung over the entrance to a small tavern around the corner of the street. She pushed the door inward to enter and was immediately washed over with the stench of ale and the roar of druken men stumbling about and after the bar maids.

She slipped silently through the crowd, her hood still up, and settled into a small corner table where she could observe the whole room. She crossed her arms and, tilted her chair back to lift up her feet to rest them on the table.

Joel "Dragonheart" Malawi

Into the tavern walked a young man of nineteen years, wearing forest green robes of an Assassin, though everyone in the room paid him no mind. Slowly, he walked toward the bar and shrugged off his bag that smelt of animal blood and meat. "What do you have for us today, Dragonheart," asked the bartender. Joel reached into his bag and brought out chunks of deer meat as well as some squirrels and a chunk of boar. After examining the catch, the bartender laughed and slid a pouch of money across the bar. "Another successful hunt then! Most excellent." Joel nodded his thanks and draped the bag across his shoulders once more before his deep blue eyes went to the huntress.

He studied her with an unwavering gaze before he stopped at her table. "We work in the darkness to serve the light," he muttered quietly, trying her knowledge if she truly was like him; an Assassin.

Kaya Menawa's golden eyes raised to meet the man's gaze. "Nothing is true, Everything is permitted," she mused as she unfolded her arms and stood to her feet. She bowed her head slightly and crossed her right arm over her chest, touching her fist to her shoulder to express to him a "formal salutation" that she had learned in the later days of her training.

Despite her excitement upon meeting a brother, she kept her eagerness withdrawn and her face neutral. She had always been very slow to trust, even among her brothers and sisters in the Brotherhood.

She sat back down in her seat and silently motioned for him to sit across from her in the vacant wooden chair. She peeled back her dark green hood to reveal her thin face, sharp jawline and deep copper skin. Her eyes were a stunning gold, almost a burnt amber, hue and her burgundy hair was cut short and angled past her chin in the front with a small braid falling just behind her right ear.

Joel "Dragonheart" Malawi

Joe took the seat opposite her after returning the formal greeting. Although he was tempted to pull his hood back, He was skeptical; hesitant. He had been afraid to unmask himself when in town. With a deep breath, Joel pulled his own hood down, revealing steep cheekbones that made his face seem sharper than it actually was. His deep blue eyes seemed menacing, but they were calm and soft. Black hair was pulled behind him in a ponytail, though there was a feather weaved into his hair to show his birthright.

His skin was lighter than hers, as his father had been a White man. "I am glad to see a Sister here," he rumbled after a moment of studying her. That was his way of reading someone he didn't know, even his brothers and sisters in the Brotherhood. "It is good to have someone else here." He jerked his hood back up when glass shattered somewhere behind him. His actions suggested that he was hardly ever in town and when he was, it was to trade for coin or to assassinate someone. He kept his hood up after the noise, afraid of having someone see his face and knowing what he looked like.

Her eyes flicked over behind him to a flustered bar maid who was hastily cleaning up bits of broken glass that had splayed across the floor. The wooden floor boards were dark with spilled ale as she kept her gaze down, her cheek's burning brighter than a Redcoat's. Several men roared with laughter while they watched her scramble to clean up her mess.

Kaya scowled, torn between want to rip those drunkards apart and not wanting to bring more attention to herself than was needed. She always chose the latter; hide in plain sight, never compromise the Brotherhood. She shook her head ruefully and she too slowly drew her hood back up.

She turned her attention back to the man in front of her. She concluded him to be a few years younger than herself by the look of his face, she would have guess otherwise when she first noticed his towering height. Then again that had always been a bit difficult for her to judge, her being so small.

She watched his rigid posture and gave him a small smile, remembering how stiff she was when she was first venturing out into the major towns for trades and contracts. She didn't much care for the claustrophobic effect of all the people, she much rather enjoyed the wide open space the frontier had to offer and the company of wolves, elk and babbling rivers. However, she had adapted to being able tolerate the noise and the people after years of drifting from frontier to town and back again.

Her social skills weren't the greatest, she often felt very awkward trying to converse with the pale faces...their way of speaking was strange and alien compared to the way she was raised. Even after years of experience, it still felt foreign. She gathered it would most likely remain that way, and she preferred it.

"Yes, it is comforting to meet another of the Brotherhood. Have you seen others...?" she spoke slowly, choosing her words carefully and over thinking about what to say. To better prove she really was part of the Assassin Order, she suddenly remembered about the mark she had gotten. She removed the hidden blade from left forearm to pull up the sleeve of her coat to reveal the Assassin's emblem tattooed on her wrist, the tip of the "A" pointing towards her.

It had been so long since she had encountered another like her, that she had almost forgotten it was there. Since the attack on her home village by Templars, almost all of the ones who were still in training were slaughtered.

She felt a sharp pain in her stomach as it twisted at the thought of the death of her closest friend. Once she was sure he saw her mark, she pulled her sleeve back down and began to re equip her hidden blade.

Joel "Dragonheart" Malawi

Upon seeing the mark, he too undid the hidden blade at his wrist and tugged up his sleeve. Upon completing his training with his mentor, an old retired assassin, he had received the Mark. There it was, on his wrist with the top pointing inward, toward him. Once certain she'd seen it, He pulled his sleeve down and reattached his hidden blade. At her question, his heart flipped and his eyes became sad. "An old Assassin," he whispered. "He was my mentor for so long. He was killed last month by Templars at his home. I've been tracking them since. As for others, I haven't seen any. You're the first."

He looked up as the doors swung wide. Narrowing his eyes, his vision changed, everything going dark while Kaya became a soft blue. The man who had just walked in was red. Templar. Joel blinked and tugged his hood further down, casting his face further into shadow while he sat forward, doing his best to blend as the man slowly past by their table. "Give me your best scotch," he called. Joel turned his head slightly to watch the man carefully.

Kaya noticed the sudden shift in his eyes and instantly regretted her choice of words. "So he knows loss as well...who doesn't when you lead the life of an Assassin...?" she thought, closing her eyes for a moment and reliving the horrors of seeing her people slaughtered by the hands of power hungry Templars.

The image of her friend's, Kuruk's, blood pouring out from a gaping bullet wound in his chest flooded her mind. She could still feel how hot his blood was on her hands while she was beside him, comforting him in his last moments as he struggled to cough out words that were drowned out by the screams of the other villagers.

Hard for her to believe it happened so long ago. Nine years. And this other Assassin's loss was only one month ago. His pain was still a fresh wound...

She was partially grateful for the distraction as the doors crashed inward, scattering her thoughts. The moment the man set foot in the Tavern, Kaya had a bad feeling. The fine hairs on the nape of her neck stood on end. The air around this man was very wrong and she could tell the other Assassin's sensed it as well.
Was he alone? Were there others waiting outside? If there were...how many? Kaya's mind raced through all the possibilities. With each step the man took towards the bar, her heart pounded faster. Her fists clenched and unclenched nervously. She did not like being in small, crowded room with an enemy that came in unexpectedly...too many variables.

Every survival instinct in her was screaming to eliminate the threat right now, but she knew better than to rush into things without first strategizing. Too many innocents, they could get in the way, they will scream and bring attention to them. It was most likely better to tail him to a secluded area, possibly find out what his motives were and if he reported to someone with a higher rank.

"Two others outside," he murmured quietly, turning his head back when the man looked toward them. "Armed, all of them." The bartender had given the man a bottle of his best scotch and soon, the Templar was making his way outside. Joel readied himself to follow. "Tail them at a distance," he sounded like he was strategizing to himself almost. He probably would have been had he not been looking at Kaya.

"They could lead me to my mentor's killer." This was said to himself as he rose to his feet, silently following the man to the door, where he stopped with his back to the wall. He watched the man rejoin his companions and spoke. "Let's get back," decided one of them, turning away. "Nicholas will be pleased to know another of those savages' villages are under Templar control." At this, Joel snarl silently, fists clenching into balls. He was tempted to kill them now, but there were too many civilians to worry about. He didn't want any guards to come running at a scream from an innocent.

He would wait until they were alone. He would listen until then, getting as much information about this Nickolas person. He could be the Templar responsible for my mentor's death, He thought bitterly. The men were finally on the move and Joel had completely forgotten about Kaya, having been wrapped up in discovering if they would lead him to the man who killed his mentor. Swiftly, he got up high to avoid them detecting him, though stayed out of sight of the rooftop guards. He knew they wouldn't hesitate to shoot.

"Have you found the apprentice yet," Joel dipped his head slowly, inching along the roofs as he listened to the men. "Not yet," replied the man holding the scotch. "He's as elusive as any Assassin."
"Maybe by now he will have no longer been a novice," suggested the third. Joel chuckled quietly as they wound through the town. "I don't think he was ever a novice," responded the first. "The way the citizens talk about him, it seems like he's a shadow."

"Not even the most experienced Assassin can evade us," cried the scotch man. "We've killed just about all of them! We have the upperhand and Nickolas wants to celebrate!"

Kaya followed the younger Assassin quietly to the door, pressing her shoulder against the other side of the door frame. She felt sick with rage when she heard one of the Templars mention the words "savage village" and "under Templar control". Her jaw clenched so tight that her teeth felt as if they might crack under the pressure. How many innocent lives were destroyed? How many children slaughtered? "This has to stop...even if I have to kill them all myself...Spirits, I swear...Not one Templar heart will be left beating..." she silently vowed.

She scaled the building with ease and crouched low to avoid drawing the attention of the guards patrolling on the roof. She trailed her new found ally and listened in close when a fresh wave of nausea washed over her.

We've killed just about all of them

Spirits, how many Assassin's were left? Were they the only ones? Surely...that couldn't be true...Still, Kaya was certain they would find a way to survive and regroup. She refused to let the Assassin Order die out, not while she was still breathing.

She ducked behind a chimney after spotting a Redcoat near them, armed with a musket and his back facing them both. She quietly drew one of her throwing knives and took careful aim before letting it fly. It whistled through the air before lodging itself in the back of his skull. The Redcoat dropped, his body lifeless. Another Redcoat on the neighboring roof took notice but didn't live long to investigate. Kaya quickly took aim once again, threw her arm forward and the blade buried itself into the second Redcoat's forehead. His head whipped back from the force of the knife and he too slumped to the rooftop, mouth left hanging open. "Heh. Perfect aim today, Kaya..." she smirked to herself.

Joel "Dragonheart" Malawi

The young Assassin stopped when their targets stopped at a large warehouse that appeared abandoned, though it probably wasn't. He was right, as another Templar patrol exited the building. "Nicolas is waiting for you slackers," rumbled a Templar with a grin. "A job well done indeed! We only have to worry about a few of those pesky Assassins now." The Templar holding the scotch bottle chuckled, lifting his hand high. "And among the ones to kill," he rumbled, sounding quite pleased with himself, which sickened Joel. "Is old Simon's young apprentice. He's as slippery as an eel, that one."

Joel tensed, flexing his wrists in anticipation when a tall fat guy came out of the warehouse. He wore what would have passed as a fancy shirt and vest complete with pants and good shoes. Along his left face was a long, nasty scar. Probably from a bear or a wolf. Might had been a weapon, as well. "Well done gentlemen," called the fat Templar. This had to be Nicolas. "I never thought we would see this day that the Assassins are being wiped clean from the face of the earth. They've been a god damn thorn in our side for too long." Joel tensed his muscles again, flexing his wrist out so that a hidden blade extended from his wrist. He would kill this man who kept speaking. "Have you found Simon's apprentice yet?" The Templars shook their heads. "He's still evading us somehow," answered one of them.

Nicolas shook his head. "As long as there are still Assassins breathing," he rumbled darkly. "Our order is in jeopardy of being eradicated like bugs. We must exterminate them before they exterminate us." That was it. Joel couldn't take it anymore and leapt over to the warehouse roof, quietly throwing knives at the two who were up there before he dropped down through a window onto a catwalk, where he watched and waited as Nicolas and he others walked into the room.

Kaya's insides felt like they were on fire. A few. Only a few Assassin's left. She swallowed back bile that threated to rise in her throat before following the younger Assassin's lead on the warehouse roof and through the open window onto a catwalk. She tugged the front of her hood lightly to cover her face a bit more.

She slowly took out her steel tomahawk, ready to obliterate anyone who dared to cross blades with her. She watched the other Assassin closely, ready to cover him when needed and ready to leap into battle. She could sense that this was his fight by the way his muscles tensed and coiled, ready to spring. And this robust scarred Templar could potentially be his target. Justice might be seen today.

He had looked around the room while she had been following him and showed her the layout before pointing toward a hidden spot. "Need you to clear the guards out," he rumbled, his gaze scanning the entire room. "Stealthily. I don't want this damn Templar escaping me." The tone in his voice suggested something very personal had happened with Nicolas and his family when he was a child.

She nodded. "Understood," she muttered, deciding then to switch to her hidden blades for quick and silent kills. She took in her surroundings, forming strategies in her mind of how best to eliminate the guards. The warehouse was full of crates stacked on top of one another, making easy access for corners to hide behind as well as to climb up on and back onto the catwalk.

Carefully placing one foot in front of the other, she navigated her way along the catwalk to the far corner of the room.

Two guards, muskets in arm, marched in opposite directions from each other along the wall. Kaya waited, watching them closely and timing her attack to be able to take them both out silently. There was a 3 second window when they were out of the line of sight from other guards and they were close enough to each other that she could use both of her hidden blades.

She grit her teeth nervously, watching the two guards walk back and forth. "Wait..."she breathed, barely a whisper. Her heart hammered so hard against her ribcage, she was paranoid that they would be able to hear it. Beads of sweat trailed down the sides of her face, making her hair stick to her skin. "Now." She leaped from her perch and drove her hidden blades into both of their skulls simultaneously. She quickly withdrew them, and scrambled up a tower of crates when she heard another guard's footsteps approaching quickly. She drew her bow, nocked an arrow and waited until he turned the corner before letting her arrow fly. It pierced the third guard's throat, severing his vocal chords and left him unable to scream or alert the others.

Kaya smirked, hopping down from the crates while his body slumped to the ground, dark red blood pooling around him as well as the other two. "Three down. Four to go," She thought as she placed a boot on the most recently dead guard's cheek and yanking her arrow out of his neck.

Her footsteps were light and quiet as she approached the next set of guards, standing stock still at the opposite end of the warehouse. Using the crates for cover she got as close as she possibly could without being detected and pressed her back up against the crates. Setting her bow down for a moment, she brought her thumb and index finger of her right hand to her lips and let out a soft and distinct whistle. Soon footsteps had begun to make their way towards her. She crouched low and pressed herself further against the boxes when the guard investigating just passed her hiding spot. She swept up behind him, put a small hand to his mouth and placed her other hand at the top of his head and gave a sharp twist.

Crack.

"Kaié:ri...Four," she counted as her target crumpled to the dirt, lifeless. His black tricorne tumbled out into the open, right in view of her next target. Kaya cursed under her breath, scrambling for her bow and loading an arrow as another pair of footsteps were rushing over. She had seconds to aim before the guard processed what he had seen. As soon as Kaya saw the red of his coat, she aimed quickly at his throat and let go. He gurgled before tumbling to the ground, next to his comrade.

"Wisk...Five." Two left. She ripped her arrow free and put it back in its quiver along with her bow before climbing back up onto a stack of crates and onto the cat walk.

The Assassin moved in the opposite direction of his Sister and crept along the catwalk before he leapt onto a beam and began to track his target's movements. Out of the corner of his eyes, He saw Kaya. Nicolas had passed right by the two remaining guards, barely noticing the others disappearing.

Joel watched Nicolas for a moment before he turned toward the last two guards. He was willing Kaya to finish the last two guards before he could go after Nicolas. His own heart began to hammer in his chest, sweat beading his own forehead.

Kaya took a deep breath, steading herself before drawing her bow again. She would have to be quick if she wanted to take out both guards without alerting her ally's target. She nocked an arrow and pulled her elbow back, taking careful aim at one of the guards. She slowly exhale the breath she was holding and drew another slow deep breath. At the zenith of her breath she let go of the bow string, and time seemed to slow down. As her arrow cut through the air and into the guard's temple, she was nocking another bow and aiming at the last guard. Another quick breath and...

The last two guards crumpled to the ground as she gave herself an accomplished smile. The path was clear for younger Assassin.

Nicolas had passed below him when the final guards crumpled to the ground. As quick as a Fox, Joel sprang into the air, unsheathing his hidden blade and aimed for Nicholas. Joel was on top of the man before he drove his blade into the man's neck. The amount of force behind his attack had them both tumble to the ground.

For the young Assassin, the world seemed to slow down, every little noise vanishing ans fading. "Never thought that it would be you to end my life," coughed the fat Templar. Joel balled his fist into the man's shirt, his blade still deep in the man's neck. "I've been hunting you for years," he snarled, his body shaking. "Now you will pay for what happened to my village." Nicholas cackled, coughing up blood that splattered onto Joel's arm. "If you were hoping to prevent any more slaves," he rumbled. "You are too late."

Joel's hand tightened at the man's collar. "What have you done," he demanded. Nicholas cackled into a cough again. "My Brothers continue to draw your people into chains," he stated, knowing they would never be able to stop the Temlars. "Most die because they refuse to help us. Others....become part of the Templar Order. They track your Brotherhood down." Joel yanked his hidden blade from the man's neck, watching blood escape the wound. Joel forced a fist over his chest. "My Brotherhood will rise from the Ashes," he shouted, tears in his eyes. "We will be whole again!" Nicholas cackled one final time, his eyes fluttering shut. "That," he wheezed, "will be a sight to see."

Joel pulled away from the body, his body trembling. "May your soul be unburdened in the next life," he said quietly. "Rest in peace, you bastard." He stumbled away from the body and closed his eyes tight. Then what was said by the men they had been tailing was true: the Assassin Brotherhood was dying, and soon only he and Kaya would remain.

Kaya, who had been sitting on her heels watching her ally claim his kill, tumbled backward onto her behind. So it was true...the Brotherhood was failing. Anger, frustration, grief and denial all ripped through her. She dipped her head low, hiding the hot tears that threatened to spill from her eyes. Even though her skull felt as if it would explode with emotions, she refused to let those tears fall. She tightened her hands into fists, so tight that it hurt. How in the world were they supposed to turn this around? She bit her lower lip. How were they supposed to win this fight...?

Nahele....have I failed you already? Is your death now in vain...? I can't let that be. I cannot stop here. I cannot give up here. Even if I die I will take these Templar scum with me. I will avenge my village and you. It cannot end here. She wiped her nose on the sleeve of her shirt and hopped back up to her feet.

She turned towards him and offered him her hand. "Kaya," she said in an abrupt almost curt tone of voice. "My name," she added, to diffuse any confusion he might have had.

We will have to recruit and create dens, but we will rise again." He sounded determined. In fact, he was determined. He wouldn't let this Brotherhood fall. Not like this.

A sudden cry reached his ears, though it was distant. "Come," he called, racing from the building and up onto a wall. His eyes scanned the area, mostly gray and black. There. Three soldiers and a civilian. They were running. The civilian tripped and fell to the ground. "There." He stated to Kaya and began to run, leaping up onto the rooftops until he was just above the four. The guards were hurting the young man on the ground. His skin was the same color as Kaya, though a shade darker.

Kaya nodded once, falling into step right behind Joel. Her ears perked at a strangled cry in the distance. She scaled the building with ease and perched on the edge, looking for the source of the sound. Three soldiers, sporting red coats were in pursuit of a young man fleeing from them. The man tripped and crashed to the cobblestone street.

She followed his lead, racing across the rooftops until they were both right above them. The guards kicked and struck the downed man with the butts of their muskets. Then she noticed the young man's skin...much darker than the pale faced soldiers brutally mauling him. No...

He flexed his wrists, listening to the blades sliding in and out. He wasn't too fond of this beating either and decided to do something. With a tug of his hood, he leapt from the roof, shoving his blades into the skulls of two of the guards.

Kaya launched herself off the roof behind Joel and fell on top of the last guard, her hidden blade finding itself buried into the nape of his neck. The guard cried out before going still, blood pooling out all around his body.

She retracted her blade and knelt beside the young man. "Are you alright?" She asked him, checking him over for any serious injuries.

He rose and turned to look at the young man, who cringed away from the Assassins. "Easy, friend," he called, a hand held out. "We saved your life." The young man looked between the two. "Why help me," he asked.

Kaya stood up as well and watched the townspeople around them gasp in horror, with hands over their mouths. One woman screamed hysterically and ran as fast as she could away from the scene.

"We should leave and speak somewhere else...we attracted too much attention. More will be coming," she muttered to Joel, sudden anxious to get away.

After examining the surrounding people, Joel nodded and gently helped their fellow dark-skinned to his feet. "Come with us to somewhere safe," he said softly, leading the young man away from the scene. It didn't take long for him to find a secluded spot near a horse barn on the edge of town. The young man sat against the barn with a sigh before he looked up at his saviors again. "Why help me," he asked again. "I have no value, except for labor according to the damn Whiteman."
