The rest of the ride seemed rather quiet.... Felicity was lost in deep thought about what was to come. It would be a lot of work.... The bigger concern would be that she would need to try and hide what she was doing. If she was gone too much, it would raise suspicions in the town. Not that they sent many her way any more unless it was a concern of business. As they had entered New York, she almost felt as if a heavier weight was falling upon her again. The feeling was even worse as she saw her house pull closer. Seeing it made her feel as if she was actually saying goodbye to Boston, and all those she had cared about.

But there was still not time to mourn.... not yet. As they pulled up, she was already ready to step out of the carriage, and accepted the hand offered to her. One help came out of the house, and with a quick greeting, he was already headed back inside, giving the order to prepare two more rooms and a meal for them. She guessed her companions were tired and hungry, and a fulfilling meal would be welcoming. After waiting for the coast to be clear again, she turned to both of her companions.

"Rest for tonight.... we have a lot to do. At least enjoy a warm, soft bed for one night, and a meal...."

As John spoke, she turned her full attention towards him, looking over him for a moment before speaking.

"It suits you...."

She was not sure of what compliment she could offer that didn't seem too casual.

"As for how you need to act.... I told everyone not only did you escort me for my safety, that you were also a business partner, needing to talk about connections, as well as seeing about help with fixing up a farm house for your work."

For this, where ever they would need to go to, it would be covered. Seeing about timber, helpers, or any other supplies would seem to fit right into place. It would hold the cover, for now at least.

Gabriel smiled at Felicity. She certainly had things well in hand. Life was about to get more and more difficult for the trio and yet, Felicity handled the tasks of billeting with practiced ease. It gave him hope for the future.

A future he would need to discuss with Felicity very soon. Having a place to set up shop would be a godsend, however they still needed someone to run the place. A Bureau was small. But with this many Templars in the same region, they would need to build up a new Assassins Guild. They needed people, and individuals to train them. They needed contacts that were sympathetic to the cause to pass information to them.

But it just wasn't in the cards yet. Such were tasks that were set up over the course of years, not a couple of days.

One thing at a time Winters, get a roof over your head. Then add more heads to it. White isn't likely going anywhere.

But then John spoke up. Oh God there it was. The thing that Gabriel had been dreading since they had started traveling as a group. The one moment that Gabriel was incurably unprepared to deal with.

....A social question.....

How did he look? The attire was not Gabriel's style. Nor did he find it functional for Assassin work. It was attire meant for pleasing social standards. It did not allow for freedom of movement. But John wasn't an Assassin so that didn't matter right? And besides, he wasn't asking if it was functional. He was asking how it looked.

Anything Gabriel could think of saying would come off as probably rude. But what was rude about being honest? Oh right, he'd forgotten that most of society enjoyed being lied to so they could take comfort in their own vanity. It was an aspect that Gabriel constantly struggled with because it was so... impractical. But he hadn't built society. He'd been built to kill, to disappear into smoke. This was a game he was terribly inept at.

So Gabriel did what he did when he didn't know what to do.

He smiled wide and laughed inappropriately loud. Nervousness evident in his tone. Saying nothing at all was better than saying something stupid.

....wasn't it...?

Gabe turned his back to the duo an scowled to himself.

Just laughed in the man's face Winters... that is not better...... Shit....

He was saved by a helper from the house, come to lead them up to their quarters. Gabriel walked in silence, pinching the bridge of his nose tightly in irritation at his own ineptitude.

-------------

The hours passed lightly. No one attacked them, no one interrupted their brief supper. When it came time to retire for the night, Gabriel found himself restless and lonely, as he had most nights of his life. There was no training to be done to keep him busy, no one to talk candidly to because quite frankly, he didn't trust anyone with his personal thoughts as far as he could throw them.

And as proficient as he was, Gabe Winters just wasn't that strong...

He smirked to himself suddenly. There was always training to be done. Always something to do.

He shut the door to his room and arranged his blankets and pillows to make it look like someone was sleeping under the covers. At least it would look like that if anyone came in to check without a light. He then put his hat on the nightstand and pulled up his hood. It was only a little breezy as he opened the window and stepped up onto the sill. The air felt good on his face.

Without much more than an upward glance, Gabe leaped from the window and twisted his body in midair, his fingers latching onto the edge of the window on the outside of the house. He quickly hauled himself up and in no time, his hands clasped the edge of the roof. Gabriel loved climbing. He loved being up high where nothing but God could touch him.

He vaulted up on to the roof and walked casually up to the point of house, a steadying hand placed against the side of the chimney. He looked out onto the city of New York and smiled to himself. The architecture was so different in America. But it was also pleasing in it's simplicity. Row upon row of red brick buildings, built to standard of various heights. The lights were everywhere. Windows, streetlamps, all glowed with their own life. Even from this distance, Gabriel could tell that New York was alive.

As he looked up, he noticed the chimney was no longer in use for the day. So he got a couple steps running start and vaulted up to the top. Once there he placed both heels together and stood carefully. His back was stock straight, arms folded in front of him with each hand clasping the opposite elbow. His head was tilted down, masking his face in the shadows of his hood. All anyone would see of his features was a slick grin of a black shadowing silhouette against the pale white full moon.

He stayed that way for a long time, just looking, gauging. Yes he could do this. He could make a difference here. This is where the new Order would be born. New York breathed with it's own life. Gabriel would take some of that life and create a new arm to protect the city.

Gabriel hopped down off of the chimney and spread out on the angled roof. He set Reaper next to him and placed his hands behind his head, finally finding his center. He closed his eyes and slept fitfully all night right there out in the open air.

John frowned slightly at Gabe's laughter but still chuckled. "Oh, foreigners...never fail to make me laugh." John thought outloud under his breath, before a man came to lead them into their quarters. John would of asked Gabe the two questions he wanted to ask, but he was so tired that the second he saw his bed he just fell onto it and began to sleep. John hadn't slept since he got back to America so it was no wonder he was this tired. Although John rarely slept regardless, since due to his traumatic life the only thing he experienced when he slept was nightmare after nightmare after nightmare...and tonight was no exception.

The nightmare he had was a pretty common one, most of his nightmares were just him re experiencing his most traumatic memories, tonight it was the death of his mother. It was the typical stuff he had seen more than 10 times, he gets knocked out, rewakes but still in his dream, to see a butchers knife in her mothers stomach as Johns step dad rapes her. John's psycho side comes out, he tackles his step dad through a window, kills him with a shard of glass and watches as his mother dies. Well, it got to the part where they landed before John woke up, sweating from the nightmare, hearing footsteps on the roof.

Thinking there was an intruder up there, he quickly grabbed his machete, before going into Gabe's room to inform him of this, a candle in his hand and his machete in the other, before noticing that Gabe's window was open and that the bed was arranged to look like someone was sleeping when there wasn't. John chuckled "This fucker is more restless than me at night..." John thought to himself, before blowing out the candle, going back to his room, shutting Gabe's door on the way out, taking his clothes off aside from his underwear and getting back to sleep with a blanket over him and his machete next to him. He slept once again, actually experiencing the nightmare he was having again, before he suddenly jumped up from his nightmare, in a sweat, as always. Before checking outside, it was day. "Welp, might as well get the fuck up then..." John thought outloud, before getting out of bed, putting back on his suit and strapping his machete to his side and going downstairs, stretching and yawning while doing so.

PostSubject: Re: [closed] Beginning Anew    [closed] Beginning Anew - Page 4 EmptyMon Sep 22, 2014 6:55 pm

The first morning’s sunlight woke Gabriel the following day. It had been a good long while since he was able to just sleep peacefully. That he had slept on a roof instead of in a warm bed made no difference to him whatsoever. There were no instructors pushing for the day’s exercises, no trainees to guide into opening drills. Just Gabriel and time. Free time, if there was such a thing.

Upon attaining conscious thought once more, it was readily apparent to Gabriel that he really hadn’t stopped moving around since he’d left Osaka. One whiff of the air had Gabe wrinkling his nose. He’d done his best to wash while at sea but there was only so much you could do. Eventually, the smell caught up to you. He was surprised he had gone this long without noticing. Some things you just had to write off to happenstance. Still, he flushed slightly to himself at having smelled so badly and keeping close quarters with a woman for two days. As an Assassin, he was sure Felicity had smelled worse than a man overdue for a bath, but it was still the principal of the thing.

He was starting to grow stubble on his face as well. That wasn’t too bad of a circumstance honestly. Facial hair was a good natural disguising tool. As it stood however, Gabriel didn’t much need the disguise. Not yet anyway. He would need to do something about that.

After vaulting back into the house, Gabe quickly and quietly approached one of the helpers going about their tasks for the day. He inquired as to where he could get a bar of soap in the house and left a message for Felicity and John in case they wondered where he had gotten off to. The message was simple. Hygiene run, returning around noon. Without alerting either of his companions to his intentions personally, Gabriel made his way to the barn and saddled up his horse. A quick chat with the stable hand told him where the nearest creek was, only a mile or so away.

So Gabe rode at a decent clip, enjoying the freedom of being alone for the first time in days. He hated being alone all the time, the feel of comradery was always welcome. But Gabe did most of his best work alone. He was a creature of habit, and habit dictated that he remain distant from those who might befriend him. And just occasionally he wanted some privacy.

He reached the creek without incident. Gabe allowed his horse to drink from the stream before securing his reins around a nearby tree so the beast could graze a little as well. And then Gabriel fell back on his upbringing. It was Japanese custom and culture to apply yourself fully to even the most menial of simple tasks.

Gabe stripped and washed his clothes in the water, one piece at a time. His coat, gloves and boots were material that was best not washed, as most of it was leather, so he left those aside. But he meticulously washed everything else that he owned, slipping each article of clothing up on a tree branch to dry in the wind. Once the clothes were finished, he slipped into the chilly water himself. It was a warm morning but the water hadn’t yet caught many of the sun rays. It was fine, Gabriel had had to train in the dead of winter back in Japan. Stripped of all but his small clothes, he’d been left to fend for himself for three days as a snow storm approached. Tactical survival they’d called it. It wasn’t easy, but Gabriel Winters had proven true to his surname and had made it through the storm in one piece. A little chilly water was nothing by comparison.

He scrubbed himself clean with the soap he had liberated from Felicity’s home. Soon, he even removed a shaving razor he carried in his saddlebag, and carefully and meticulously removed his growing stubble.

He air dried some minutes after that, moving through various kata’s that saw him punching and kicking phantom attackers in rapid succession. Sometimes he dreaded these dances with invisible partners. It reminded him that he’d had no childhood outside of training. Gabriel Winters had been raised to be nothing short of a living, breathing weapon. He preferred his swords, but was almost equally as proficient with his hidden blades. Being robbed of any physical weapon, Gabriel was still deadly with his hands and feet. He wasn’t a brawler, he was a Martial Artist. And art, was exactly what it came down to.

It wasn’t all dreary thought though. Gabe was a killer, sure. But it didn’t mean he wanted to be a recluse. He wasn’t homicidal, he just understood the need to remove certain people from the world.

He was still naked when he went to start packing up his saddle bag. His clothes should have been about dry at that point. Gabe was removing a fresh pair of small clothes from the saddlebag when he heard the crunch of feet on dry leaves coming at him rapidly.

Instinct took over and he launched into action, making a dive for Reaper, on the ground some four feet away.

He didn’t make it.

He was stopped in mid turn by the muzzle of a pistol being stuck in his face. “Let’s have none of that now shall we?” A deep voice said.

Gabriel noticed that the man wasn’t alone. His partner had come circling around on the far side of the tree that held Gabe’s drying clothes. “No need for undue cutting there friend. We’ve seen you with sharp objects in hand.”

Gabriel raised his hands to shoulder height in surrender. Seemingly unaffected by the fact that he was being held at gunpoint while naked in the woods. “So.” He started, eyes darting up and down his attackers. “You thought that by relieving me of my blades, pistols, and clothes for that matter, it would give you significantly improved odds of surviving this encounter. No?”

The man laughed. He was wearing a fabric tunic dyed green. Native in style, to the Indians that lived on the frontier. Brown trousers, moccasins for shoes. “A sensible observation I’d wager. Anything else to say before I rid you of your life, and your modesty as well?”

“In fact yes.” Gabriel commented, watching his nervous partner twitch slightly. “I have a few questions for you. What was the name of the Templar that sent you to kill me?” At that prompting, the man with the pistol frowned, confused.

“Got it all wrong mate. No one sent us here but us. We had friends in them soldiers you killed.”

“I label you a liar.” Gabriel said evenly. “See you weren’t there with the group that ambushed me in Boston. There were no survivors. And you might have been present when my companion went to pick up supplies later that same day, which means that you had someone to follow, but still had not seen me with sword in hand. Therefore, someone told you about my skills. And the only people that have need to fear of my steel, would be a Templar. Inadvertently painting you as a poorly disguised soldier meant to make my killing look random. I’m sorry, but you’ve failed in that. So again. What is the name of the man that sent you to kill me?”

“I think that’s enough out of you then. Not that it makes much of a difference. Shoulda stayed with your little slanty eyed, rice eating pals across the ocean. Your punching and kicking dance there won’t save you at this range.”

Gabriel gave the most intimidating smirk he could muster while nude. The man with the pistol didn’t seem to mind, he was in control after all. But his nervous buddy looked like he’d seen a ghost, for the pallor that his face took.

“Will it not?” He said darkly.

The man with the pistol made to pull the hammer down to arm the gun so he could pull the trigger. Gabriel moved almost too fast for the eye to follow. In half a second’s time, he was pointing the pistol back at its owner, now with the hammer cocked. The man yelped in pain and surprise at such a precise application of pressure points on his wrist. He cradled his gun hand in its opposite, confused and surprised all at the same time at having been so effectively relieved of his weapon.

“In your haste to take me unawares and unarmed… you forgot to do something as simple as pulling the hammer back on your weapon. And instead of rectifying that problem when you had me, you chose instead to chat. That mistake just cost you your life I’m afraid.”

“You wo-”

Gabriel shot him in the forehead, leaving a trail of red mist out of the back side of his skull. He dropped as a meat sack to the grass. His nervous partner took off running. Gabe snatched a throwing knife from his saddle, spun and hurled it with a grunt. The small knife embedded itself in the runner’s right calf and he dropped with a scream to the ground.

“Hold that thought.” Gabriel said evenly. And then he proceeded to dress himself leisurely. When finally he had slipped into his black robes, which looked more like a long coat than anything, he walked over to the bleeding man who was trying desperately to crawl away.

“Now then. Would you like to try a hand at this game? Or do I need to get persuasive?”

“You’ll just kill me anyway! And if you don’t, they will!” the man howled.

“Wrong on two counts there. I have no reason to kill you if you tell me what I want. Which you will, regardless. I’m just offering you a less painful way to divulge. Your friend was stupid. You don’t seem to be. You’ve been wanting to run ever since you saw me here. You were the smart one. So, cooperate or not?”

Gabe put his hand on the knife in the man’s flesh and wiggled slightly, causing him to scream in pain.

“SHIT! ALRIGHT! I’LL COOPERATE!”

“Good. Now first. It was you and your partner in the woods night before last wasn’t it? Right before my companion heard that deer. I heard footsteps. You had planned on attacking us then, but hadn’t accounted for some curious wildlife interfering with your stealth. Yes or no?”

The man nodded rapidly to the affirmative.

“I thought so. And why were you following us? As I said before, you weren’t at the first engagement. So you didn’t see me or know who I was.”

“The girl!” He sputtered out. “We was following the girl. Had orders to wait until anyone else showed up at that blasted barn. I saw yous two go at it with them knives. Grahm didn’t…. he wasn’t there…”

Thus the fear and caution at my skills in close quarters…

“I see, and the orders. They came from….whom?” Gabe pressed.

“I… I can’t Sir… he’ll flay me, he will.”

Gabriel’s expression softened slightly. He reached into his pocket and rummaged.

“Oh God! Oh God!! You said you’d let me go! You said..”

Gabriel reached down and ripped the knife out of the man’s calf, causing him to scream louder yet. But Gabe just ignored it and began wrapping a bandage around the man’s leg. The act seemed to quiet the man a bit, but for a fit of whimpering. “What’s your name, Sir?”

“It… it’s Alvin. Alvin Sharpe.”

“No it’s not. Your name is… let’s go with Enoch Calver. Sounds American enough.”

Confusion lit up Alvin’s face. But Gabriel continued. “Alvin Sharpe died along with his idiot friend Grahm whilst trying to subdue a deadly Assassin. You will leave this place and change your clothing from that god-awful disguise, and ride far from here under the name of Enoch Calver. No one will find you, you will live. To repay the kindness I’ve shown you however, I’d like to know the name of the man who sent two subordinates to their deaths, so that blood may be repaid in turn.”

Wide eyed, Enoch nodded. “His name is Sebastian, Sir. Sebastian Elsebert. He runs the port here in New York. Harbor Master, he is.”

Gabriel frowned. “And he had you spying on a woman in Boston?”

Enoch shook his head. “No Sir. Them orders come from up higher than Elsebert. From someone named White, or some such. Had us dispatched to loiter at your old place in that barn after what they done to the people inside. Told us to wait until the others come back, and to tail them to see where they go. We was never supposed to engage. I’m not a fighter Sir….” He pleaded.

“So your friend got delusions of grandeur. Hoping that by taking me down, he might get himself a promotion or some such?”

“You have the right of it. I told Grahm not to do it but he wouldn’t listen. Punched me in the guts and called me a coward. But he didn’t see what I seen, no one had…”

That gave Gabe a dark thought. “Are there more of you out in the woods, Enoch?”

“N-No Sir! We only work in two man teams. Grahm just likes… liked, talking big to them enlisted soldiers. That’s all I meant by it.”

He nodded. “Very well. You’ve been very helpful Enoch. You have horses nearby?” Enoch bobbed his head yes. “And can you make it to them unassisted?” An uncertain nod this time.

“Not a problem. I will help you there. Wait here, I’ll get my horse and you can ride. Should stay off that leg while I lead you.”

“How do you know I won’t just bolt when I have your horse?” Enoch asked cautiously

Gabriel smiled genuinely. Then held up the bloody throwing knife.  “Right… understood.”

Gabe was true to his word. He packed up his things, replaced Reaper on his hip and led his horse over to where the wounded man lay. He helped Enoch up into the saddle and followed the man’s directions to where the two saddled horses lay tethered in the woods. Again, Gabriel helped him down off of his own horse, then back up to Enoch’s own.

“Where do you think you will go from here?” Gabe asked curiously.

“Perhaps… Virginia? Big enough place to get lost I suppose.” Enoch replied.

Winters nodded. “Then Godspeed to you, Enoch Calver. May the shadows hide your footsteps from those who would wish you harm.”

He mounted his horse and made to turn away. But the former scout called after him. “Sir?!”

Gabe turned and raised an eyebrow.

“I…. uh… well I thought today was to be my last day on this earth. I’d never expect you to keep your word for anything. So um… Thank you, I suppose.”

Gabriel stared at him for a long time. “The name is Gabriel Winters, Mr. Calver. And you’re welcome. Don’t waste this second chance you’ve been given.” He sawed his reins and clucked his teeth, urging his Chestnut forward, but still tilted his head back toward Enoch.

“You should find a new profession my friend!” He called as he rode away. “This one doesn’t seem to agree much with your soul!”

And so Gabriel made his way back to the house from which he'd originally set out from, looking for John and Felicity to tell them what had happened, and smelling quite fresh indeed.

As it turned out, John had woken up pretty late (as was usually the case). It was currently around 11 in the morning and everyone was already up, although Gabe was no where to be seen. "Where's the sneaky fool gone now?" John thought outloud, before seeing the note and chuckling to himself. "Well, I guess I got time to myself then." before going outside and sloppily climbing to the roof, sitting there with his legs over the edge, gently swaying back and forth. It seemed that all he could think about was the two questions, both of which could possibly change his life. One of them Gabe probably already knew but the other was one that John doubted Gabe would expect. The latter was the one that really stuck out since he became truly aware of who he was and no matter how much he tried to block it from his mind...the only thing going through his mind were 5 words. "Am I a good man?" John thought outloud, looking up at the bright sky, before suddenly seeing someone coming to the house in the distance...

After Felicity had ensured a proper meal for her new guests, the woman took a small one to her room where she began preparing for the next day. No doubt rumor would spread, and she could expect guests tomorrow. She let out a long sigh as she undressed to a more comfortable evening dress, one that was not so elegant that she could wear around her house for comfort, but still be respectable if anyone should need her.

Checking that the windows and door were locked, she pulled the curtains closed and lit a few more lamps around the room. She was far too awake to sleep yet.... at least her mind was. Though she regretted them, the woman slipped the small box from her luggage, and pulled her glasses upon her face. Giving a little sigh, she pulled out the papers and her attention fell upon them for a good portion of the night. How she wished she could just throw on her robes and run around the town tonight. But that would have to wait until they were settled in for a few days. After a long time of researching, the woman could feel the cricks in her body, and decided that she should perhaps get some sleep. After all, there would be things to do tomorrow.

The time for sleep was short, and before dawn broke, and for that, she was rather grateful. Less time spent sleeping meant less time to dream as of late. Getting up, the woman began preparing for her own bath. She was only scolded for a moment before the help went off to do another task, leaving Felicity alone again. This was good for her.... once the woman was out of the room, she shut the door and locked it. Ignoring the annoyed questioning from the other side of the door, she only caught that Gabriel had stepped out and was planning to return around noon.

The man didn't know how lucky he was. Neither of them did. Most saw her as nothing but a spoiled child playing in her father's footsteps. That or a weird woman who was too smart for her own good. How she wished she could just slip away for days without any explanation and no one looking for her.... but she couldn't. She had a duty.... her position helped the order.... her money, and her social skills.... they got people into events when needed and all the gossip she heard was vital information. As the woman listened to the noises of a day starting, when she heard people talking about visitors, she sunk lower into the water for a long moment, holding her breath for as long as she could. Needless to say, the woman took a long bath, mostly to avoid being disturbed.

It did not take her long to get ready once she had finally left the solitary of the bath. Sighing, she readied herself and them moved downstairs where there were already people waiting for her. Putting on a smile, she spoke with them, wishing that she could be anywhere but there at the moment. It was always the same... gossip about the redcoats, about other people in the town, who was doing what, what they were planning and what events were going on. Invitations to parties and other events offered to her, and then small talk about the business and what needed to be done. Really it was boring, and this was not what she had wanted to do.

It was almost noon when she was finally able to chase them off. She had to give her unsure answer about attending event they were offering to her. They could be so kind, and yet so pushy. Though, something did sound promising. She had only hoped that she had not kept Gabriel or John waiting. Though, she guessed that they would not hold it against her. After giving word as not to be disturbed, the woman changed into her robes. This felt so much more comfortable to her.... letting out a sigh of relief, she only hoped that it would be easier to slip away during the day.... though she doubted it would for the first few days. Peeking out into the hallway, she slipped away, out of her room and towards Gabriel's.... it would be time to talk. If he did not mind, she would prefer to leave the house. As safe as it was, she did not feel comfortable yet.

Several people were leaving the house as Gabriel rode up. Presumably business contacts of Felicity’s. He ignored them completely as he trotted past. His attention was more focused on John Ambrose, who had somehow ambled up to Gabriel’s spot on the roof. It wasn’t pride or jealously that was confusing Gabriel about it. It was the idea that John had had the actual ability to make it up there without a ladder.

Gabe filed that away for later.

He also noticed movement from the window of the room in which he was supposed to be occupying. The flash of teal caught his attention and he nodded to himself. Good, Felicity was ready for the real work to begin, having finished with her business dealings.

Gabe couldn’t imagine the rigors and stress of leading a dual identity life. How did you separate one from the other sometimes? How did you fully devote yourself to the Creed when you had dozens of higher citizens to placate? Another topic with which to discuss with his fellow Assassin when time allowed. For someone who had so much time on his hands, Gabriel was getting dreadfully little accomplished so far.  They hadn’t even been out to the possible site for their new home yet. Granted, they’d only been in New York a day. But it was time to make sure that the gears were moving.

He discretely tilted his head to the stables, indicating to the other two that that was where they should meet up. John would have no problem noticing, as he had likely spotted Gabriel coming from some distance away and was watching his every movement. Felicity, Gabe would have to trust that she was paying attention and take the hint.

They needed to be brought up to speed on what had happened. Things were about to go down-hill. The fact that Sebastian’s scouts weren’t going to report back was going to cause a stir, giving away that Felicity had either discovered and killed them, or that there was an outside hand at work against the Templars. Namely, Gabriel or John. That meant that their little group had to move fast.

His Masters would have been very cross with him for letting Enoch live. Witnesses tended to complicate things greatly. But quite frankly, for all the training that Gabriel had received, he hadn’t always agreed with his teachers on the moral points of their work. Gabe would kill for the cause. He would punish the wicked and power hungry. He would destroy the organizations that made the world ignorant to their goals of domination. But he would not kill someone who couldn’t defend themselves if he could help it. Alvin Sharpe had been a bystander, pulled into the silent war by the Templars to use as a pawn for his skills.

And at the end of the day, his Masters had sent him, Gabriel, to a place which required as many experienced Assassins as possible. A country on the brink of war, according to the letter Orville had sent. With the British leaning on the colonies from all sides and the colonies attempting to legally push back, the country had become a powder keg waiting for the right spark to ignite it. And the Masters, Mentors all, had deigned to send one man into the mix. One man to make a difference. What had they been thinking? The fount of knowledge and combined experience between them was immeasurable. And yet they had sent a single man into the lion’s den to do what? Avert a war? Stop the Templars? How was he supposed to stop the Templars when they had no idea what the faction’s goals were? The men he’d been sent to assist in any capacity, had been completely obliterated, killed almost to the last man. What could one person do in the face of something like that?

Gabe pushed his doubts to the side. He wasn’t just one man. He had Felicity with him. That in itself was a boon. John would likely ask Gabriel to join the Brotherhood. But without a proper Mentor, was he even allowed to induct the man? And would he want to? John was extremely rough around the edges, and lacking temperance. But not all Assassins in history were men and women who knew how to hide in shadow. Some had been the strong arm of the Order, fighters in only that aspect. Some were thieves, others were archers, others still were simply spies. It was such a simple question for Ambrose to ask, but one that required a very complicated choice.

Really, it was speculation at the point of it. Gabriel didn’t even know if that was what John wanted to talk about.

He brought his horse into the stable and tied it to a post, leaving the saddle on. He leaned against another post and ran both hands through his hair, having not tied it back in a tail from earlier, his raven hair fell to his shoulders, with several loose strands sliding down over his forehead and in front of his eyes.

In a few minutes’ time, both of his companions had arrived. He looked at both of them evenly in turn, nodding to both. “Good morning.” He said casually before continuing, “…There have been developments. We have much to discuss…”

And so he began detailing what had happened in the woods. And about Sebastian and the fact that they’d had Felicity under watch since the Vault had been attacked. At the end of his rundown, Gabriel made sure to leave out the fact that he had let Enoch go free, or the extended conversation with the second scout at all. That was a detail that both of them didn’t need to know.

“Our window for remaining anonymous is rapidly closing.” He said finally, “But before we get started, questions?” Looking to both of them for inquiries or concerns.

John looked at Gabe, and then Felicity. "Jeez, and I thought I was terrible at noticing when I was watched..." John said with a chuckle "I'm kidding" he reassured. However, what kinda did annoy John was how...smart Gabe made himself to be. He had that kind of look that screamed "I can see right through you" and like so many others before him...thought he knew John like the back of his hand, they thought he was some idiotic, psychopath who would never be close to being an assassin. But the thing is, he hadn't seen who he truly was under that facade, nobody had...and that pissed him off. He felt like he needed to prove to Gabe, prove to himself that he wasn't some psychopath and prove that he was...a good man. He needed to prove to himself he was a good man, or he was going to just stop in general. Not just stop trying to be an assassin or help Gabe, but he planned that unless by this time next year he was a person he could consider a good man...he was going to take his own life.

Upon seeing that Gabriel still hadn't returned, Felicity fell silent, and her eyes kept watching every little movement. One subtle glance out the window was all it took to tell her that the man was waiting outside. It would be more discreet. Slipping out of the house was easy enough, and into the barn. Moving over to her new friends, she looked to both of them, waiting patiently.

At being told she had been followed, the woman was in a bit of a panic. How could she have not been noticed? She had done everything so carefully..... or was there someone else watching her that she didn't know? Someone who had noticed her movements not so much as an assassin, but one of the richer people in town? Watching how she did things..... her mind raced over a million things as Gabriel told his story. The assassin didn't let John's words trouble her. That couldn't be helped right now. Taking a deep breath, the woman crossed her arms and bowed her head, lost in thought.

What could be done now? They would have to move even faster now. Still, they would have to be careful about it. She wasn't sure what she could do.... what could be done to help this at the moment.

"What is our next move then?"

She knew she was skilled.... but the woman had doubts about leading. She could act on her own, keep herself out of trouble, and get out of it when she found herself in it.... but leading other people, that was something she wasn't sure she was up to. Better that this man help with that. On her side, there was still plenty she could do though.

"If there is someone you wish to speak too, I'm sure I can get them over for a meeting.... if you need it."

That wasn't the only thing, but she wasn't sure what Gabriel had in mind either.

((OOC: So sorry for the delay. >.< I had an allergic reaction to something and had to take medicine for a few days to cure it. That stuff knocks you out. >.<))

Gabriel glanced at John, wordless at his joke. It was a little humorous, for the only member of the trio that wouldn’t likely pass a mental examination. But he didn’t laugh. It was something as simple as unity. Gabe was an Assassin. Felicity, was an Assassin. Both of them made up all that was left of the Brotherhood in this part of the country. Laughing at a joke directed at Felicity would show favor towards John. Favor to an outsider was likely to cause division in what remained of the Brotherhood. This, Gabriel would not allow.

That, and Gabriel Winters just didn’t laugh. Unless it happened to be at the most socially awkward times possible. And in that instance, mostly by accident…

But he did shake his head at Felicity. “We speak to no one until this is over. Right now we face an immediate threat. We don’t know how many teams of scouts they had on you or the other Assassins at any time. At this point, we cannot be certain of if we are secure in our planning. Until we take Sebastian out, or at least throw his plans into disarray, we are to speak to no one. No informants, no contacts. Any intelligence gathered will be first hand. Which is where the assignments begin. Given the situation we find ourselves in, we need to operate under the assumption that your home is being watched. It might be a good idea for you, Felicity, to spend time abroad in the city for your business. The more you move around the harder it will be to predict your movements and plan ambushes for our enemy. I would very much like to tie a string around you and toss you out into the masses to see who comes running first. But our time frame does not allow me to watch your back as I should.”

He scratched his chin thoughtfully for a moment. “Here is what we are going to do. We need to get out of the eye of the Templars. John, you and I are going to take the wagon and supplies out to the location you had in mind. At least, if for any reason there is a raid on this house, there won’t be much in the way of evidence to tie Felicity to the Assassins.

Felicity, we know that Sebastian runs the docks here in New York. I want to know exactly where. I want to know what kind of foot traffic goes in and out of the facility, what hours he is typically there, what kind of security he has on the building and around his person, if any. Where the patrols are… the works. If you can, I want every scrap of information on this man possible, down to how big his boots are, and what time he usually goes to the latrine…

You have the more dangerous assignment here. And we don’t have the manpower to watch over you. But I knew Orville. I only received a small taste of his training, but I trust his methods explicitly. You have the skills to do this. Remain unseen by the British if possible. I have faith in you. I will contact you in the morning and if it is deemed safe, I will collect you and bring you to the new safe house.”

It was such a natural flow of words that it almost surprised Gabriel for a second. He’d never pegged himself a leader but there it was. He’d given assignments effortlessly. Maybe it really was just a question of what the topic was. If a person asked Gabe what they thought of the sky on any given day, he’d likely tense up and say something stupid. On the other hand, when it came to work, Gabriel was so focused that the natural order of things flowed from him easily. He knew what needed to be done of course, he was a professional after all. But it was just a foreign thing for it to be him to take the lead. He was used to getting orders, not giving them.

Gabe tilted his chin up to John, indicating he should get going. “Get the wagon together but before we get going, make sure nothing was stolen. Not that I don’t trust Felicity’s help of course.” But they needed to know how close the Templars were sniffing, which is what he left out for the others to gather themselves.

For a long time, this was going to be a defensive game for the Assassins and John. Gabe couldn’t wait to take the fight back to them.

Gabe untied his horse, whom he was considering naming Peanut Butter. Maybe that wasn’t an appropriate name for a horse though…

He palmed the animal’s nose and rubbed gently. It seemed to enjoy the gesture, as it started to nuzzle into his hand further.

Watching John go about his task a few stalls down, getting the horses ready to the wagon out behind the barn, Gabe flicked his eyes over to Felicity to see if she had any questions before going to her own assignment.

John listened to Gabe's instructions carefully, before nodding and going to get the wagon. He looked inside the bags for the supplies and to see if any of them had been stolen, which they hadn't as far as John could see...John got onto the wagon and sighed, knowing just how hard it was gonna be to see that place again, before beginning to head to Gabe, to see if he was ready to go or not.

As the other assassin spoke, Felicity listened patiently. Ultimately, she was glad the conversation had been pulled away from her, but she was troubled. She was so conflicted right now, with everything. It was a wonder she was able to hold her sanity through all of this, and now, she was being told that she had been followed. For her, she had no concern. She knew she could take care of herself.... but what about the others? Not caring to share her thoughts, when Gabriel had finished, she waited until John had left before speaking again. Giving the man a bow, she turned, but spoke over her shoulder as she left.

"I will tell you everything I know when I return."

With that, the woman stepped out of sight and was off to the docks. There was much to be done about this. She was running every thought over her mind. How could she have let this happen? It would be no matter now.... since Gabriel had taken care of it. Still, they would have to be extremely careful. But here.... here she felt perfectly in place. The woman slipped into a crowd of people who seemed to be enjoying themselves. She went unnoticed, and fell into the crowd, checking carefully around here that no one was following her. For the first time in a long time, she felt peaceful....

It took her a bit of time with her caution, but she made her way to the docks, unseen, and it was going to remain that way. Watching everything with a cautious eye, she made her way further towards the water to a warehouse, and found a spot that seemed to remain unchecked. It was here that the woman paused for a bit, listening and watching her surroundings carefully.

Gabe gave a silent ‘Good Luck’ to Felicity as she turned away. The days to come would be very trying for her.

He walked his horse out to open air again with John in tow with the wagon. “Alright Mr. Ambrose,” he said as he swung up into his saddle. “I’ll be following you. Lead the way.”

They walking the horses at a steady pace for maybe an hour when Gabriel finally spoke. “I don’t think we will be able to get much more secluded than we are now. Did you still wish to ask those questions of me, John?”

It was a peaceful afternoon. The sun was high in the sky and a pleasant breeze was drifting across the land. Gabe had his hood pulled up instead of wearing his hat today. The hat was just a prop after all. He preferred the confined comfort and security that his hood afforded him.

John may have mentioned before that he wanted to have the conversation at a tavern but Gabriel had no intention of allowing it. Questions that held gravity such as those like to come from John’s mouth were best spoken with complete clarity. The alcohol that Ambrose was likely to imbibe would hinder his ability to form rational thought. And if he was going to ask what Gabriel thought he was going to ask, then he would need to show the emotional security and maturity to make decisions with a clear head.

Always a test. Everything. Life itself was a test of some kind. The simple situations Gabe was subjecting John to was all part of a purpose. Always probing, always measuring. Gabe told John to check the wagon. John did. Gabriel told John to stand watch during the night.

John had.

The ability to follow orders was an important one to have. But there was so much more to being an Assassin than following orders. Honestly most of the time, they were more akin to suggestions than orders anyway.

Nothing is true, everything is permitted.

A simple Creed to live by. A difficult Creed to fully understand. It was more symbolic than anything. Not exactly guidelines, such as they were. The Creed was meant to cause thought. It was meant to shed understanding to those who could see past the nature of the words and look deeper into the meaning that they held.
Was John ready for it? And was Gabriel the one to show him the way?

Only the wind could direct their sails. And it was blowing well today. Gabriel had to smile quietly to himself, where John couldn’t see. Fate always worked in strange ways. He enjoyed the intricacies of life and liked thinking about how the web of every individual connected to one another. The only thing he didn’t like about his situation right now was that he normally did most of his thinking way up high where no one could reach him. A tree, a tower, a roof. Something. It was only from a high vantage that a man could measure himself against the worth of the world. Which is to say that it was a humbling experience to realize exactly how small you were in the grand scheme of things.

How large did John fancy himself when measured against the world?

John sighed, sadly and nodded before mumbling to himself "Welp, here goes nothing..." and starting to head towards New York, the city he had refused to go anywhere near in oh so many years...while John and Gabe were riding, which they had been doing so for an hour, while John just daydreamed and thought about several things, Gabe asked if John wanted to ask him the two questions that had burned in his mind...John at the time had been looking down at the ground, before when Gabe asked him of this, his eyes darted up towards Gabe, his head not moving a single inch.

John took a deep breath, then he took another and another before nodding. "Okay...I think you know what one of the questions are, however...before I ask you that, I need you to tell me something. Now, please, don't be biased and say yes to be kind or something, the more honest with me you are...the easier this'll be. Gabe, be my pal...and tell me..." Before taking a deep breath, ready to ask the question that had been burnt into his sub concious for...oh so long now..."Am I a good man?" John asked him, his eyebrows furrowing and his eyes narrowing, patiently waiting for the answer as seconds turned into minutes...minutes...turned into hours.

PostSubject: Re: [closed] Beginning Anew    [closed] Beginning Anew - Page 4 EmptySat Oct 04, 2014 10:55 am

It wasn't the question Gabriel had been expecting. He turned his head slightly to regard John from under his hood. He kept his features set in stone, not betraying an erg of emotion. But the only thing coursing through his brain was 'this is going to be awkward'.

But maybe it didn't have to be. Gabe just needed to turn the train of thought to work. Did one have to be a good man to live in this world? Obviously not. Did one need to be a good man to be in the Brotherhood? Certainly not.

Gabe didn't answer for a long time, letting the silence draw out probably longer than he'd intended while he collected his thoughts. Finally he flicked his shadowed eyes back to John and spoke with as much kindness that a murderer could muster.

"I honestly do not know how to answer that question John Ambrose. Not for the idea of the question itself mind you, but rather because I don't know that I would be a leading authority on what it is to be what society would deem a good man. At the end of the day, I'm a killer. A murderer. I kill for purpose, but that does not lessen the horrible nature of my work. What is a good man? Can you define one for me?" he asked rhetorically.

"The answer to your question lay within yourself, John Ambrose. Not from the lips of another. I can no more put your mind at ease with sweet words than you could actually take comfort from them. Every man lives with their own demons. Everything we do in life is a test of our mettle, of our fortitude and of our courage. In some cases... living with ourselves is the only test worth looking at. To be a good man, you need to be able to look forward to the future without fearing specters from your past. To be good is to be larger than yourself, to do for others in ways you would not do for you. To help the weak, to stay the hand of the strong and tyrannical. To be so very selfless in everything you do. I believe that you struggle with who you are and who you want to be, John Ambrose. There are two men fighting for supremacy in your soul. One is the man who would do anything to stay away from the repercussions of his actions and live as a scoundrel. That man is the most dangerous to the answer you seek, because the other side is the man who wants to be a part of something bigger than himself. That man is your conscious. The very fact that you have one gives you part of the answer you seek. But it is not good enough.

Your problem is that being good is very difficult. It means to act with thought and compromise, whereas you tend to act on instinct and impulsiveness. I've seen you fight John. You are unthinkingly brutal. Being touched in the head may be simply an excuse to cover for your insecurities. It is much easier to say you are crazed than to take responsibility for a horrible act.

So the real question is not whether you are a good man, John Ambrose. But rather, do you have the courage needed to face your own demons and fell them where they stand?

Do you understand?"
Gabriel said, blinking slowly and patiently from under his hood in the afternoon light.

John listened intently, looking a tad bit annoyed at the fact that Gabe didn't know, but as John listened, it all made more and more sense...John let Gabe's final question hang in the air for a moment, looking up at the sky, thinking about if he truly did understand. The thing is, he didn't have to act on impulses anymore, he had a mind, he just rarely used it because he never needed it with his bat shit crazy facade. But what John interpreted to Gabe's words...he nodded. "Yeah, I...I think so." John said, a tad bit of doubt in his voice.

"Okay...that...wasn't exactly the answer I was hoping for, but...it's good enough, I think. Now...the next question is one that I think we can both agree that we've known I would ask you this for a...long time now. You see, in the short amount of time that I've known you...this...has given my life purpose again. It isn't just...going to taverns, fucking whores and drinking my life away anymore...it's...something better. And I wanna make sure it stays that way...Gabe, can you train me to be an assassin?" John asked, not looking very hopeful.

Gabe closed his eyes. There it was. The ten ton hammer crashing down on the anvil. The question that he had been waiting for. And yet, even though he had been expecting it. He was not prepared for the jolt of electricity that went down his spine.

Being an Assassin by definition was to have purpose yes. And that was a trait sought by many. But was he allowed to make this kind of decision? They certainly needed the numbers. But did he have the authority? Did John have the temperament?

"John," he started with a cautionary tone. "I understand where this kind of life would appeal to those outside of it. But make no mistake about what it is we do. We kill. We murder. Assassins live in pain, cause pain, all in the name of removing pain. It is not a glamorous life, nor an easy one. This is not a comitment to take lightly. When you pledge yourself to the Order, it's an obligation for life. When you submit yourself to the teachings of the Creed, your old self will be gone forever.

You are more than capable of being one of us. But your skills are raw, undefined. Your temperament is rough, and lacking finesse.

I can teach you these things. But it's not a question of if you can learn. It's a question of if you want to change. If you do, then I will break you down until there is nothing left. When you think you can't take anymore, I will push you harder. I will challenge even the most base of what makes you, you. And when it is all done, and you complete your training, I will reforge you into a sword of the Brotherhood. Your life will be for the world, instead of yourself.

As one born to this life, I can think of no higher purpose. But I also lack your perspective. Honestly John, I was raised to know that only a Mentor of the Order was able to determine a recruit's potential. And no, I am no Mentor. I know not if I am even allowed to say yes to you.."

It was a lot to get across for such a simple question. John seemed sincere in his desire. Sincerity went a long way when a man's road was so short on decision. John had no other life. No one to guide him. He wanted more. He wanted his pain to have meaning. Who was Gabriel Winters to deny such a request?

Gabe nodded to himself lightly.

"If... you believe in your heart, that you can embrace and accept what I have told you. Then..." Gabriel looked over again, a cold look in his sapphire eyes.

"...Then I say to Hell with the consequences. And yes. I will train you. My Masters in Japan would be rather cross with me. But they aren't here. I will deny no man with a willing heart who would join us in the crusade for equality and peace. I will reiterate however, that this path is no simple affair. There is much to learn and we are already occupying a point in time when we are under siege by the Templars. But if you can follow my lead, then I will take you as my pupil. Do you accept these terms?"

John listened to Gabe, taking in everything he said. He wanted to change like no other anyway, he wanted nothing to do with what he used to be. So if anything, that was a good thing. He completely understood anyway just how harsh his training would be, but with a life like his? Anything not harsh would of been just out of the ordinary. John smiled, for the first time in years before nodding. "Yes, absolutely, I wouldn't say no even if I could get the thing I want most in the universe."

"Very well. John Ambrose, by whatever power and authority I hold, I accept you into the Brotherhood as an Initiate. Upon completing your instruction, perhaps we will see about tailoring you some robes to make things official. For now. Paint me a picture."

Gabriel returned his attention to the road as they traveled. Things were getting a bit more remote, which was good. A place on the frontier away from the watchful eye of New York Templars would be ideal. The woods held anonymity, and with it, security.

"Give me an idea of what I am working with. I know you are a bit of a brawler, we will work on that later. What of weapons? What do you want to be? I am... was, the top disciple in the discipline of blades and hand to hand combat. Put a blade in my hand from any culture and the battle will be mine.

I can disappear into crowds, scale towers in minutes, and continue to run long after my opponents break down winded. Other skills, I have aplenty. But those are where I specialize. Who do you want to be? Are you a ranged fighter? Close quarters? Do you prefer Blades, to hands? Or Hands to firearms? Tell me what I have to get you to."

John smiled even wider as Gabe accepted him into the Assassin order, he laughed happily, knowing that while his life would be a lot harder, it would be better than anything he had been doing for so many years.

When Gabe asked what kind of assassin John wanted to be, he looked at Gabe and said "I want to wear something...moderately similar to this, maybe a more flexible version of it with a hood, thanks. I am good in hand to hand combat but I actually wanna start learning how to fight with a blade, preferably my machete. I also want those...wrist blade thingies if possible if my machete gets taken off me as well. I personally only use guns if I'm disarming one off of someone and using it against them, I wanna get better endurance and stamina as well, I'm not big a big fan on stealth though, I'm more of a running and slashing type of person. I also wanna get better at climbing, while I'm okay at it, I'm pretty sloppy in general." John listed out.

Gabriel nodded thoughtfully. It was a solid beginning to work with. It would take a long time to get John up to snuff on his skills but it was something that they were sure to have a lot of. Building a new safe haven for Assassins was going to take time. It was going to take secrecy. And in the middle of it all, they would have to track down and take out the Templars in the area.

It was a tall order for three people to accomplish. But Gabriel would have to just take it on faith that they would prevail. He had to. To fail was death for America. Especially with all of the problems stirring up between the Colonies and the Crown lately. Gabriel had little doubts as to who was behind that trouble.

"How far are we John? Distance is good but we don't want to be so far removed that we cant react to what is going on in the city."

John thought for a minute before looking far in the distance, his eyes then widened and an...almost maniacal grin spread across his face as he pointed forwards...New York was see-able.

"That's how far."

John then quickly started galloping at the max speed the horses could go towards New York. It was a bumpy but fun ride as John laughed all the way there, before they eventually got there in 5 minutes flat. John then remembered exactly where he was...and his smile disappeared. "Okay, it won't be much, but...the place is abandoned anyway. Get off your horse and follow. Come on." John told Gabe before getting off the wagon and began to walk to the place.

"Now, I personally bought this place for about a thousand pounds a few years back, since I couldn't imagine the idea of anyone living here after what I experienced in this hell hole. So don't worry about payment. It's abandoned now, it was a building for the poor to go to if they somehow saved enough money to get a room. Should be good after a bit of renovating." John explained.

They then got to the building, John looked up at it, and sighed sadly, all of the terrible memories coming back, John even knew that most of the worst ones had been blocked off by his already broken brain as a defence mechanism, not doing so would practically be giving him the right to go even more insane...

"Okay...welp...here we are, welcome to a staple of my past...a place I didn't really want to go back to." John simply said before unlocking the withered door...his head on the door for a few moments before opening it, walking across the floor covered in dust, looking down at the floor, sighing. Before turning around, looking at Gabe.

"So...what do you think?" before extending his arms, as a gesture to mean he meant the building.

Gabriel dismounted and tied his reins around a low post in front of the house. The seclusion was good. It would certainly serve his purposes. It kept the city within view, albeit in the distance, but they would be close enough to act or react to threats to security.

The first thing that he noticed upon his boots touching the ground however, was that the path hadn't ended. From the road they had traveled, to the front of the house. The path was lighter, seeing less use. But it was still odd that an abandoned building had a path at all. Gabe filed that away for later.

As they entered, Gabriel could tell that the place had a lot of emotional weight on his companion. This building had probably been the site of a lot of pain for John. It would be good for his recovery, Gabe thought. Part of meeting the future was confronting the past. Turning a place of negativity in John's mind, into something that stood for something would be a good experience for the man.

His eyes flicked over the place with great scrutiny. John was speaking idly but Gabriel was having a hard time focusing on his voice. Things weren't adding up. There was certainly dust in the house. But it was disturbed. It wasn't consistent with an abandoned house.

John was asking him what he thought. Gabriel's mind flicked back to the present, though his eyes kept noticing details of the room from under his hood.

"I think... Initiate Ambrose, that this house is not quite as abandoned as you had thought. Look there on the floor." Gabe pointed without looking. "Scuff marks in the dust pattern. Someone was dragging their feet. Recently."

Gabe's ear twitched and he cocked his head to the side as his perceptions caught a noise that ought not be heard in this area.

Horses approaching from the opposite direction of where he and John had come. His mind kicked into overdrive and motioned John to silence with his gloved hand so he could focus on the sound. But there were too many hoof beats to narrow in on a number.

"Horses approaching Ambrose. Your tenants are returning. Back side of the house." He said quickly but calmly. "Training starts now Disciple... You have a high probability of us being severely outnumbered by an unknown force of unknown combat skill. It could be nothing, perhaps just squatters but likely not. Do you go outside and meet them head on? Or lay in wait, perhaps to spring a trap if danger is to ensue. Both paths have merit. Choose, and bear the weight of the repercussions. You have 5 seconds to decide, 10 seconds before we are discovered standing here. Act now."

Gabriel folded his arms across his chest waiting for John to pick.

John listened to Gabe and looked at the floor to see the dust, he couldn't quite see how it was different but he decided to just agree."Oh yeah I kne-" he began to say before Gabe silenced him, motioning that Gabe could hear something, then John began to hear it too...the sound of horses. Gabe then detailed the two options had, John had 5 seconds to decide. John quickly thought about the two options and the possibilities raced through his mind.

If he decided to run and slash, he and Gabe could be killing innocent people, or they could be trying to take down soldiers with extensive amount of training, which would be a suicide mission. He also at this point could only really use his fists, since he had no idea what to do with his machete, so that was out of the question.

If he decided to wait, they could possibly spring a trap, they would also get a good look at what they were dealing with, it seemed like a win win but John then remembered that he was pretty terrible at stealth, which was a major disadvantage and could mean whether or not he and Gabe are seen.

John thought about this in 2 seconds, and it took him another to decide.

"Okay, I say we lay and wait, I need to get better with my machete before we go running and slashing, you're better at this stealth business than I am, so I'd suggest showing me where to hide." John decided and...almost ordered.

The shadow of a smirk creased Gabriel's lips at John's response. But only the shadow of one...

He'd already been thinking of where best to stay in the shadows prior to even offering the options to John.

The house interior was cramped. A single room dominated most of the main floor. But there was a small set of stairs leading up to the second level of the wooden building, with a small cupboard underneath of the flight of steps. Gabriel flicked his eyes over to the opposing corner of the house, away from the cupboard into the corner. The windows in the house allowed a lot of natural light into the space, but in the late afternoon, the windows magnified the sun high in the sky. Shafts of light cut across the path of the corner in an almost blindingly bright swath, leaving the eyes to adjust if one was to look directly at the corner.

He motioned easily to John towards the cupboard. "Door remains half cracked John. Do not come out unless we need to surprise them, or if I call."

Gabriel stepped quickly through the light and pressed himself into the dark corner, just to the right of the back door of the house. When the door opened, it would swing over to cover his position from sight. When the door closed, the light would be his natural camouflage until someone took a close look. Their positions placed Gabriel and John at a diagonal. If attention was drawn to Gabe, John would be behind them.

As soon as John was in his position and Gabriel had tucked himself away, the door swung open bodily. Laughing and cursing wafted into the room along with several men carrying heavy sacks. The men lofted the sacks onto the lone table in the center of the room and Gabriel could see silver coins spill to the surface.

Robbers then. And ... One two.... three ..... Gabriel counted silently to himself. Hmmm.. ten of them, though I don't see any firearms among the lot. All of them are carrying swords, knives...

"Alright boys, good haul today." One of them said as they surrounded the table, still blissfully unaware of Gabriel in the corner as the last one through the door turned to shut it.

"We will split shares as usual. Only, this time Little Jim gets some of his cut for not doing his job." All of the men laughed, all but Little Jim who folded his arms and scowled, looking over to the closet. He scowled deeper.

"Thought I closed that when we left..." He muttered as he took a couple steps toward the door. John Ambrose was two paces away from being found.

Gabriel kept his cool. It might get ugly, but best try all tactics first before dispatching the group.

He cleared his throat from the corner loudly, startling most of the men into drawing their steel. Little Jim among them, as he turned his back to John's spot.

"Who in the bloody hell are you!?" The apparent leader said as he muscled his way to the front of the large group now surrounding Gabriel.

Gabriel stayed quiet for a moment, leaving his arms crossed over his chest. "Landlord." He said evenly. "Rent's past due this month. Come to think of it, rent was never paid. This poses a problem my friend, because I have another interested party in the property so I'll need to go ahead and evict you. Already went to the magistrate in town and incurred a hefty fee in paperwork I'm afraid. I think what you have there on the table should cover it."

The man cracked a grin, looked at all of his companions and narrowed his eyes in confusion. "You seem a bit educated friend. But I can see you don't do numbers and sums very well in your head. So let me spell this out for you. There are Ten of me and One of you. Why don't you scurry on out the door while I am feeling generous, and leave your valuables while you're at it."

Gabriel kicked off of the wall casually. "I've nothing of real value unfortunately. Only this sword to tell it true. This steel is worth Ten of me easily. So how about this. How about, since we are negotiating the pricing for this transaction, I'll put it on the table with your rent. It seems one of us is in the wrong here, as we are both trying to collect. I'll be generous in my dues. Those bags should more than cover the fee."

"And what exactly do we owe you for? I'm seriously starting to think you're a bit touched in the head mate."

Gabe took one step forward, eyes still shrouded in the darkness of his hood. The shafts of light cut across his middle as he slowly pulled Reaper from his belt, still sheathed.

"Why, for your lives of course. You took that money from people who earned it, violently if I had to place a guess. That is enough to earn my ire. I offer you one more time. Leave peacefully, the money remains here. You get to keep breathing. Fairest deal I've ever offered."

The boss shook his head and smiled a crack toothed grin. "Take this fool."

Gabe curled his tongue and whistled so loudly that most of the men winced. The sound was high pitched and shifted down at the end...

Almost, like the scream of an eagle...

Then Gabriel charged.
